WHEN THEY CATCH ON, IT'S GON BE A $TORM
biography
Through his music, Detroit’s Kino PIF articulates his past experiences as an inner-city kid with musical aspirations. Growing up on Detroit’s West Side, he witnessed many things children should not have to see. For him however, this was a gift and a curse, as it allowed him a unique perspective of the world around him. Due to the ruthless environment he was raised in, his parents were wary of him spending time hanging out in the neighborhood. Still, as a naturally gifted athlete, Kino found refuge in music and sports, which led to his enrollment in one of the city’s best private high schools. Kino calls this experience, “the best of both worlds,” as he saw what life could be like from the other side throughout his teenage years. He recalls making his way to school while listening to Detroit legends like Blade Icewood, Team EastSide, Doughboyz Cashout, and Big Sean.
After earning a basketball scholarship, Kino began making music his sophomore year of college at the Illinois Institute of Technology, a small school on Chicago’s Southside. During his down time after practice, Kino began utilizing the microphone that “was just there” and started recording music. Together with close friend and Chicago producer Jxnoir, they began making tracks in their dorm room, using a twin-sized mattress and closet as a recording booth. The positive reception he received from his classmates and peers convinced him to take his music seriously.
The relatability in his music is what Kino takes the most pride in. Whether you’re dealing with a difficult time in your life, or having fun hanging with friends, Kino’s music still resonates because he speaks about things we have all lived. As a newcomer, Kino plans to expand and master his sound, as he is already one of Detroit’s most versatile artists. Having already worked with some of the cities’ biggest rappers, Kino displays his versatility on both “3 Peat,” the gritty track with Detroit legend Peezy, and “Be Cool,” where he trades slick talk with rising star Babyface Ray. Be sure to pay attention to Kino in the future as he continues to build his fanbase and showcase his star potential.
